After 35 years of leading a company, Dale Evans knows what he’s looking for in an employee. Surprisingly, it’s not necessarily someone with all the right skills.

“We hire first for attitude. You can train for skills,” Evans said on Oct. 27, at University of Wisconsin-Stout as he spoke to students, faculty and staff during the 32nd annual Cabot Executive in Residence program.

Evans, a 1973 UW-Stout graduate in industrial technology, discussed the people-first working environment he has promoted as president of EVCO Plastics of Windsor, near Madison. EVCO has more than 1,000 employees at nine plants, including in Oshkosh, Georgia, China and three in Mexico.
