For those involved with business, the greeting “how is business?” is probably substituted for “hello” more times than not. I was surprised recently, when the answer received was, “I used to think business was a good thing, but of late people have been proposing that business is bad because it earns a profit and some feel profit is inherently is evil.”

That gave me pause to think. Where did notions like this come from — and how did it get to this point? For as long as I can remember, retail, service and manufacturing businesses were viewed as good things. Those who owned and operate were held in respect.

They may have been called shopkeepers, merchants, machine shop owners or business people instead of entrepreneurs. They were local residents who had taken risk after risk to build their business and earn a living.
