Once upon a time, I had difficulty remembering the meaning of the word acronym. I constantly confused it with the word anagram.

I mentioned my plight to an understanding acquaintance and asked for a simple way to keep the two separate. His reply, “Anyone can remember our name, you meathead.” I never had the problem since.

Which leads me to the subject of this month’s missive. Because so many groups, businesses and organizations have long names, it saves ink, paper and breath to use the initials or acronym. We all know what USA, GM, NASA, NATO and a hundred more stand for and what they generally do. Today’s discussion will concern several groups that you most probably have heard of, but the amount of knowledge you have of them may vary.
