Hamburgers were 15 cents and an order of french fries cost a dime when Dick Lommen joined McDonald’s in the late 1950s.

He began his career as a 15-year-old crew member for a La Crosse location that was the chain’s 141st. By the time he graduated from UW-La Crosse, Lommen was managing the restaurant. He eventually raised $90,000 to buy the single-store franchise and launch what would become Courtesy Corp., a business that owns and operates 57 McDonald's restaurants in the Midwest.
