The value of K-12 STEM education

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is widely recognized as a critical area for improvement so that the U.S. can maintain global competitiveness. According to a report by the Joint Economic Committee in April 2012, “[despite] the clear demand for STEM talent by domestic employers, the U.S. is failing to produce an ample supply of workers to meet the growing needs of both STEM and non-STEM employers...”

The Northern Wisconsin STEM Collaborative is working diligently to change that with programs like the STEM Youth Apprenticeship, a school-to-work initiative designed to take high school students beyond the typical classroom experience. Participants get a combination of academic and technical instruction and access to hands-on occupational learning at a worksite
